UPDATE August 1, 2008 - The Planning Dept. took the CoKL Official Plan forward to Council in July. The Councilors wanted the opportunity to review the plan in more detail and meet with staff one on one. The OP will be discussed in Council again in September.

UPDATE June 30, 2008 -

Since last year, the CoKL has had much to deal with that has delayed their final review of the new Official Plan.  The work stoppage during the winter and the retirement of the Planner that was coordinating the OP in the CoKL planning department have slowed the process of review.

We have been assured that the 4 Mile Lake "Special Policies" submission for the new CoKL OP were very well received, and viewed by the planning department as a very progressive cooperation between FMLA and CoKL.  We can be proud of our Association's efforts and the valuable input that you all contributed to the process.

The CoKL Council expects to review the OP by mid-summer.  Through discussions with Dave Hodgson (Ward 3 Councillor) he advises that he fully supports the FMLA proposals our special submissions for inclusion into the OP.  Mayor Ric McGee encouraged our members at the AGM that he "would not let us down" in Ward 3.  With this support, we are very optimistic for our future protection at 4ML in the new OP. 

You can show your personal support by writing to Ward 3 Councillor - Mr. Dave Hodgson   (dhodgson@city.kawarthalakes.on.ca) and to Mayor Ric McGee (rmcgee@city.kawarthalakes.on.ca) to communicate your FULL SUPPORT of the Four Mile Lake Association submittal to CoKL Official Plan.

UPDATE July 1, 2007
The 2007 Annual General Meeting had a great turnout, with Randy French, BES MCIP RPP, of French Planning Services Inc as our Keynote speaker.  Mr. French gave a detailed update of the CoKL OP status and the FMLA special submission to the OP.  (Mr. French, a professional lake planner, was contracted by FMLA to help prepare our submission to CoKL Official Plan).  He emphasized the very progressive cooperation that FMLA and CoKL Planning Dept. demonstrate through the compilation of the 4 Mile Lake "Special Policies" submission for the new CoKL OP. 

Randy also recommended that each of you write to our Ward 3 Councillor - Mr. Dave Hodgson   (dhodgson@city.kawarthalakes.on.ca) and to Mayor Ric McGee (rmcgee@city.kawarthalakes.on.ca) to communicate your FULL SUPPORT of the Four Mile Lake Association submittal to CoKL Official Plan.  

Mr. McGee spoke at the AGM and encouraged the members that he "would not let us down" in Ward 3.  So now is our chance to let him know the importance of the FMLA OP submissions toward formally protecting our 4Mile Lake environment, safety and quality of life!

UPDATE Feb. 20, 2007
CoKL Planning Department did not receive the required feedback from the Province of Ontario until Dec. 23/2006.  They recently advised FMLA that changes to the OP requested by the Province will be completed in the coming weeks, and a "final draft" is now expected to be complete sometime in May.  The changes are not considered to be significant, however Public meetings will be scheduled during the summer to outline the changes. The summer Public meetings will be similar to those held last summer, but not as intense or as plentiful.

UPDATE...Sept. 10, 2006
- We received a great response to our request for your comments & input through the past year.  We have incorporated a great number of recommendations from all of you that provided feedback!  Thanks to everyone that gave feedback for the FMLA recommendations to CoKL policies for the CoKL Official Plan development. As committed, your executive completed the FMLA submission to CoKL, with comments and recommendations regarding the new CoKL Official Plan (OP).

As directed by the FMLA members at AGM in June, the executive initiated a committee to coordinate review and input to the CoKL Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning documents, have attended Public Meetings held by CoKL regarding the OP preparation and have reviewed the details of the draft Official Plan. FMLA obtained the professional assistance of a Certified Lake Planner to advise and aid in the preparation of the 4ML submission, including the proposed "Special Policies".

These "Special Policies" are intended to address issues that affect 4ML, like backlot (and cluster) development, promotion of commercial development (eg: marinas, trailer parks, etc), industrial development (gravel pits), tourism facilities (eg: motocross park, campgrounds, etc.) are all addressed in the OP.  We have also provided input to ensure the preservation of the environment of 4ML and it's watershed - areas like the Carden Plain (west 4ML), Altberg Preserve/Watershed, as "irreplaceable assets"; unique features of 4ML such as the beginning of the Canadian Shield; and the "4ML quality of Life" that all our residents and members have grown to enjoy and respect.

The FMLA submission has met the requirements and timetable laid out by the CoKL submittal process, and represents the best effort submission by the Board of 4ML in consultation with an expert in Municipal and Lake Planning, and in consultation with City advisors and representatives. The FMLA committee also solicited the feedback and comments of FMLA members and residents of Four Mile lake stakeholders. The FMLA submission will now be reviewed by the CoKL Planning Department, and may be adjusted by the City and/or province.
