Uncertain Future for Historic Mitchell's Bridge
by Monica Schmid [May 2011]

As you travel north from Fenelon Falls via Northline Road you will cross the charming Burnt River by way of historic Mitchell's Bridge. This picturesque bridge has served the vicinity for almost a century linking the surrounding communities and adding to recreational appeal of area. Sadly, Mitchell's Bridge is coming dangerously close to only existing in photos and paintings.

The long-term viability of the bridge is a topic of concern and in January of this year, a public meeting was held to discuss the future of the bridge. Several options were proposed. The city representatives suggested that the best option is for the bridge be torn down and replaced by a new two-lane concrete structure. Preservation of Mitchell's Bridge was not an option that was deemed worthy of discussion. Simply put, "Out with the old, in with the new".

Generally people travel and live here so that they can get away from the busyness of the city. It is an ideal place to wind down, relax and enjoy the country side. A two-lane bridge will attract more vehicles to the area, specifically heavy trucks and faster motorists. This goes against the reasons most people choose to come to the area and will negatively affect the safety of the residents and visitors who enjoy bicycling, hiking and snowmobiling in the area.

Some of the local residents have started a petition to encourage the city to fully explore the option of repairing and preserving the bridge thus keeping it as an important heritage icon. If you are interested in showing your support to save the bridge, please sign the online petition at petitiononline.com/Mitchell/petition.html.

A second public information meeting is also scheduled to be held on Saturday May 21st from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, at the Coboconk Community Centre, #9 Grandy Road, Coboconk. If you would like more information or have feedback, you are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Let's hope Mitchell's Bridge continues to contribute to the charm of our area for generations to come!
