Title: Major storm damage on 4ML
Post by Administrator on Jun 8th, 2011 at 11:43pm
June 8th 2011 - the severe storm in the Kawartha Lakes area hit 4ML tonite, causing much damage around the lake.  If you can, you should check your cottage for damage, trees downed, hydro line safety issues, etc.  We've seen all of the above problems around the lake.

major trees down all over the place, many on top of hydro lines.  (attached is picture of 3 trees all fallen on hydro lines on my driveway).  Hydro says no power restored until Saturday 10pm....but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes longer than that since they will have to remove all of the trees everywhere before restoring power.

FML Storm Aftermath:Clean-Up Efforts Underway

The clean-up process from the monster storm that hit us on Wedesday is in full-swing. Scores of downed tress are being cut up and moved away. Many lake residents escaped serious property damage, but some weren't as lucky - our next door neighbours lost their summer cabin as a result of two giant (and majestic) white pines blowing over on their roof. To see over 100 year-old trees plucked up out of the soil like dandelions is a surreal sight and provides a sober reminder of the incredible forces that were at play here. Luckily, the cabin in question was vacant at the time the storm hit.

A man was killed on Balsam Lake when his float plane was blown over in the storm: http://www.mykawartha.com/website/article/1023512--pilot-killed-in-crash-identified-update

Through it all, we have been sent some amazing stories, such as the one about this very lucky man:  http://www.countyvoice.ca/2011/06/photos-minden-man-thrown-off-his-deck/

Power is still out in most areas and won't be restored for a few more days yet. The scope of the power outages in Ontario are unprecedented: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/06/08/minden-hills-ontario-tornado-weather.html

Clearly it will a while before things return to normal. We do urge that you arrange to have your property inspected (either personally or by a neighbour) for any damage as soon as possible. Any perishables in your fridge/freezer will likely need to be disposed of.

We will keep you posted of any new developments as they arise. Also, we encourage you to check our website periodically at http://www.fourmilelake.ca/ for updates.
