Can you tell us about it?  And what you think it will mean to the Four Mile Lakers?

The solar farm will cover about 50 acres. If approved, construction would start in Sept-Oct. The electricity generated will be sold to Hydro One. As for how it will affect Four Mile Lakers, I expect there will be nothing major, either positive or negative. During the 4-5 month construction period there will be extra traffic on the road, though we will be using Northline road and coming up from the south, so there should be little if any affect. The panels will be about 10 feet high, and there will be hedges or something similar planted all around the farm so they will hardly be visible from the road. There will little noise, certainly less than the noise the the transformer across the street makes now. (The first time I heard that thing bang I thought there had been an explosion). We will be paying about $100k in property taxes, so theoretically your property taxes should go down a little. We have put aside an annual fund to be used for the community. We are thinking of things like a community or drop in center, a new firetruck, fixing the roads near the farm, that kind of thing. (My son wants to use some of the money to build a skate/bike park.)  We are going to need a high speed internet connection, if Explornet needs to upgrade their system for the solar farm this may benefit everyone. Again, I can't think anything big that would affect Four Mile Lakers. We are planning a visitor center, and we want to work with local schools if they want to add solar power to their program.

Driving south out of Coboconk on 43, where 43 turns East to Burnt River, right at the corner, south east, across the street from the transformer. You can type "Coboconk solar farm" into Google search and the first hit should be a map.

That's right, just across the road. The project is 10MW and will cover about 50 acres.

I find this interesting - that there may be a use for the rocky, cleared land that we find north of Fenelon Falls, seems that we are mining gravel and rock - why not something less destructive as solar photo voltaic energy farm.

Hi, Tom Kasak here.
I'm a local resident here on Four Mile Lake and a new director on FMLA.
Your solar farm sounds pretty interesting to me, I would love to know more.  Your son has a great idea too as there are not a lot of places for the local  and seasonal children to expend some energy.
We could really use some road improvements in the area too.
Are you going to be utilizing tracking mechanisms for the solar panels?
That's it for now, hope to hear back from you.

Hello Tom,
The panels will be mounted stationary and pointing south. Tracking is a good idea, and following the sun throughout the sky would generate more power, however I was concerned about the noise they may make while tracking. Manufacturers have assured me that the trackers are very quite, but with four neighbours so close by I did not want to take a chance.

Trackers are also relatively new in Ontario and I did not want to add the risk of them seizing up during the winter.

With solar panels so inexpensive now I think it is better to spend the extra money tracking would have cost and spend it on more panels.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.
I'm sure you have done your homework however there is a company in the States called DH Satellite and they have modified their dish mounts for use with solar panels.
Will there be any opportunity for employment, particularly in the winter if there is a need to clear the panels of snow?
Take care and good luck on your project.

I see some clearing and construction going on in that area, I assume the project has started? I know this is an old thread, but does anybody have any details?
